We've been working for years with community groups like the Bronzeville Community Development Partnership and Black Metropolis National Heritage Area on a vision of sustainable prosperity and transit-oriented development around a rapid streetcar line on Cottage Grove Avenue. The South Lakefront line would link downtown Chicago and McCormick Place to Bronzeville, the University of Chicago, and the Museum of Science and Industry. Our work has included the community-based effort to bring the Obama Presidential Library to the Michael Reese Hospital site.
In 2012 the Chicago Department of Transportation commissioned the comprehensive South Lakefront Corridor Transit Study, which explored a range of potential investments to upgrade transit between downtown and 95th Street. The study recommended only two concepts for further study: Cottage Grove BRT and Cottage Grove streetcar. We're doing an authoritative study of the Cottage Grove streetcar (South Lakefront line) as part of our ongoing economic analysis of a network of six potential routes.
Do you have a vision for Bronzeville? What role does modern transit play?
